About the Artwork

---

Through this work, Priska Dewi aims to portray baboe in a more positive and dignified light. Etymologically, baboe has a Dutch origini and is used by Dutch nobles to refer to nannies (who were mostly indigenous people of Indonesia at the time).  While the word nowadays is almost always used in a pejorative sense, it was a well-respected profession during the colonial era.

About the Artist

---

A Surabaya-born artist, Priska Dewi had made an attempt working for a more corporate setting before settling for a more personal approach to make a living through arts and illustration. The early portion of her career was spent commissions, managing her own Instagram account, and teaching classes to make ends meet. But during all these years, Priska never felt that she was drawing for herself.

After the pandemic, Priska discovered an opportunity to shift illustration from her primary source of income into a hobby that she could earnestly enjoy. Nowadays, she only paints subject that personally resonate with her.
